How do I support the SGEM?

Signing up to earn CME for listening to the Skeptics’ Guide to Emergency Medicine (SGEM) is the perfect opportunity to not only earn CME credit for something you are already participating in but also helps support the ongoing production of the SGEM. The SGEM podcast will continue to be part of the Free Open Access to Meducation (FOAM) movement. FOAM – Medical education for anyone, anywhere, anytime.

How do I earn CME credit for the SGEM?

  1. Listen to the FREE weekly SGEM podcast episode and read the supplemental notes on the SGEM website.
  2. Register to earn CME for the SGEM by clicking the Sign Up / Renew button in the gray navigation bar.
  3. Simply complete each episodes evaluation and receive your CME certificate.

How does the 6-month period work?

Depending on when you sign up to start earning CME credit, the 6-month period spans January–June or July–December. Prior months credit is available from the starting point of the 6-month span of which you fall in when you sign up or renew. CME credit for future episodes will not be available until the episode has been recorded and posted to earn CME credit for.

Example 1: If you sign up in June, you fall into the January–June 6-month span, thus you will have access to SGEM episodes eligible for CME for January, February, March, April, May and some of June (depending on when in June you signed up).

Example 2: If you sign up in October, you fall into the July–December 6-month span, thus you will have access to SGEM episodes eligible for CME for July, August, September, and some of October (depending on when in October you signed up). November and December is in the future and credit will be made available when that time comes.

How much CME credit can I earn?

Each weekly episode of the SGEM is worth up to 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. For each 6-month period, you can earn up to 26 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. You may only claim credit commensurate with your level of participation in the CME activity. The episodes that are available in your account are the episodes you are able to earn CME credit for. Prior months credit is available from the starting point of the 6-month span of which you fall in when you first sign up.

Who recognizes AMA PRA Category 1 credit™?

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ is the most commonly accepted form of CME credit for physicians and is also the basis for receiving the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.

Both PA and NP organizations recognize AMA PRA Category 1 credit™ as approved CME.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) recognizes AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ as AOA Category 2 credit.

Do my CME certificates expire?

Yes, but not anytime soon. Your CME certificates will be available for three years (July 1, 2020 – July 1, 2023).

What is the Center for Medical Education’s role?

SGEM has partnered with the Center for Medical Education to provide CME credit to its listeners. The Center for Medical Education handles payment and CME accounts for the SGEM listeners.
